Les corticales externes des procès alvéolaires montrent une structure et une physiologie identiques à l'ensemble des os du corps. Par contre la corticale interne présente quelques exceptions; connue sous le nom d'os alvéolaire, [...] Malgré un aspect plus radio-opaque, d'où le nom de lamina dura attribué à tort, il n'est pas plus minéralisé que le reste des procès alvéolaires et présente un grand nombre de pertuis (ou canaux de Zuckerkandl), d'où le nom de lame cribriforme qui le désigne également.
